Brechin Rugby Club’s “Field of Dreams” is to become REALITY thanks to LEADER funding support. After a very lengthy process involving a great deal of work and meetings with the Leader Local Action Group we have now run the length of the pitch, side stepped at least half a dozen tackles and after a few fulsome hand-offs, touched down between the posts! Well we will when we buy the brand spanking new posts and have a pitch fully marked out! Now we need to make the conversion for a couple more points! The LEADER award to our club is £52,500 and this along with our ongoing fundraising initiative means that we can deliver our Phase One.
This is beyond all our wildest dreams and means that we will soon have in place the tall weld mesh fence, new goal posts, a meeting committee room with kitchen facilities, two changing rooms with showers and WC’s, 40 feet steel storage container, a lawnmower and state of art floodlighting at the ground. How things have advanced in only fifteen months since we secured our 99-year lease at Cookston.
Now to deliver the project! We will need everyone to put their shoulder to this as it will involve a great deal of work, all executed by volunteers. This is not a concern as we are a strong “family” and all fully understand the enormous benefits that Brechin Rugby Club delivers to the Brechin, Edzell, Glens and local community which go way beyond the wonderful game of rugby!
Chair of Angus LEADER Local action group Dougie Pond said “We are very happy to support this project with a LEADER award. Committed organisations such as Brechin Rugby Club are needed in Angus to make things happen for our communities. The improvements to their playing facilities will be a great help in attracting young people into the sport, and ensuring that the club’s future is viable”.
The Trustees and Committee of Brechin Rugby Club have been overwhelmed by the level of support received from LEADER and many other donations that have been received and not least the efforts of the Club members and their belief in the initiative to raise the funding for this first phase.
In meeting the LEADER Panel, they very quickly recognised the commitment and wider community objectives of our little club and hence the support. We should all be rightly proud of this recognition of our work and objectives.
The work continues with fundraising to deliver a bespoke, permanent building complete with all modern meeting and sports facilities as well as kitchen and fitness suites.
